What is sports Medicine & arthroscopic surgery?

Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure Dr. Boyett uses to diagnose and treat joint problems including inflammation, injury, and degeneration.

Dr. Boyett performs the procedure using an arthroscope – a pencil-sized tube that can be inserted through a small incision. The arthroscope contains a fiber-optic light and video camera that sends images to a monitor where Dr. Boyett can see magnified views of the joint and surrounding tissue. This allows him to determine the cause of your problems, as well as, the extent of the damage.  A majority of problems can be fixed through the scope using accessory incisions of similar size.  Examples include rotator cuff tears, biceps tendon tears, knee ACL tears, labral tears, and meniscus tears.

Arthroscopic surgery is a popular option because it results in less pain and stiffness than open surgery and the recovery is faster.

The small incisions and narrow instruments used during arthroscopy cause significantly less trauma compared to conventional open surgery. As a result, benefits include:

  • Less postoperative pain
  • Reduced bleeding
  • Quicker recovery
  • Minimal scarring
  • Earlier return to your usual activities

Arthroscopy is performed as an outpatient procedure. Your rehabilitation and recovery time depend on the type of procedure.

Types of injuries

There are many different types of sports injuries. Traumatic injuries occur when a player is injured during play – for instance, when a football player is tackled on the field. Other injuries can occur over time due to repeated use or overuse – for example, when a baseball player develops a rotator cuff injury.

Dr. Boyett and his team specialize in a number of different procedures, including double row rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic biceps tenodesis, ACL reconstruction with both allograft and autograft, and routine knee arthroscopy for the common meniscal tears.

Other sports injuries he treats include:

  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Torn ligaments
  • Fractures
  • Joint inflammation
  • Shoulder and knee issues
  • Fractures
  • Anatomical alignment issues
